How to Clean Brass and Copper Pooja Items: Safe Care for Shivling Abhishek Stands and Lota
Keep brass and copper Abhishek stands, lotas and pooja plates clean with a gentle rinse-dry routine, careful polishing and proper storage.

If you use a Shivling Abhishek stand regularly, the most effective care habit is also the simplest: rinse and dry after use. Brass and copper naturally change appearance over time, especially when exposed to water, oils, fingerprints and offering residue. Regular gentle care is usually easier than trying to remove heavy tarnish later.
Daily cleaning after Jalabhishek
- Empty any remaining water from the lota.
- Rinse the stand, plate and vessel with clean water as appropriate.
- Use a soft cloth or sponge for visible residue.
- Rinse thoroughly so no cleaner remains.
- Dry every component, including joints and the underside of the plate.
Why drying matters
Water spots and dull patches become more visible when droplets dry on polished metal. Drying also prevents moisture from sitting inside seams or under a vessel. Keep a dedicated soft cotton or microfibre cloth for your pooja accessories.
Cleaning brass pooja items
For routine care, mild dishwashing liquid diluted with water can be enough for grease and residue, followed by a thorough rinse. Traditional household methods may use lemon/tamarind and salt for tarnish, but acids can change the finish and should not be left on metal for long. Test on a small area first, rinse completely and dry immediately.
Cleaning a copper lota
Copper develops patina naturally. If you prefer the aged look, routine washing and drying may be sufficient. If you prefer a brighter finish, use a copper-safe cleaner or a gentle traditional method suitable for uncoated copper. Decorative or lacquered finishes may require different care, so do not assume every copper-coloured product is bare copper.
What not to do
- Do not use steel wool or an aggressive metal scrubber on polished surfaces.
- Do not leave acidic cleaners sitting on brass/copper.
- Do not mix strong household chemicals.
- Do not store the stand while damp.
- Do not use metal polish on a natural stone Shivling.
Cleaning the water outlet
If your lota has a small drip outlet, flush it with clean water after use. If the flow changes, inspect the opening for residue. Avoid pushing sharp objects into a precision outlet because that can enlarge or deform the hole and permanently change the flow rate.
Storage between festivals
Wash, dry and wrap each component in a soft dry cloth. Keep items away from damp cupboards. If multiple metal pieces touch each other, cloth separation helps prevent scratches.
How often should you polish?
Polishing frequency is a personal aesthetic choice. Tarnish and patina are normal surface changes. If the product is clean and dry, it does not need to look mirror-bright to be usable. Over-polishing can also create unnecessary surface wear.
